What is the Hijri Calendar?

The Hijri calendar, also known as the Islamic calendar, is a lunar calendar used by Muslims around the world to determine important Islamic events and religious observances. It is based on the phases of the moon and consists of 12 lunar months in a year. Each month begins with the sighting of the new moon.

The Hijri calendar started in 622 CE, marking the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah. Because it follows the lunar cycle, the Hijri year has about 354 days, which is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar year.

Important Islamic occasions such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Hajj are determined according to the Hijri calendar. As a result, these dates move earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar.
